Love Abounds

It's been so long since I've been here, in this space. Both mentally and physically. It's been 7 and a half years actually. Sitting in a hospital room, participating in rounds, making friends with everyone I can... lol. I know that's super surprising that I sit here in the ICU cracking jokes and laughing as often as I can, making friends with everyone... so uncharacteristic... but you know what? It's really worked out for me in the end.

I can't stop thinking about the parents who yell at the doctors and nurses. The ones who blame them when things go wrong. Last night I over heard a parent complaining about having to potentially go home on a medication. Complaining about how the doctors don't know what they are doing, they try this they try that and nothing is working... he was going to write a letter. TO WHOM? No really... Who are you writing the letter to? The doctor who is taking care of your child? Their team? The Attending Doctor who was at rounds this morning, in charge of the plans that are being put into action by the rest of the team on the unit? And what is your letter going to say? "Why don't you know what you're doing?"

???

I guess my point is this: Are you actually accomplishing more this way? Or anything at all?  I don't think you are. That's just one example of the type of parent I've been exposed to in my life as a cardiac mom. And I think that I've seen enough to have a bit of advice and I wanted to share my approach to the world.

Love always conquers all... right?! I believe it does. I believe it because I witness it every single day. I can count on one hand the amount of doctors and nurses that I have not cliqued with this trip... ONE HAND! And you know, it's not because they are bad at their job, we just didn't clique. But the amount of people who I have loved and even become friends with is overwhelming! Almost every attending, fellow, and nurse that has taken care of my child has a place in my heart forever.  I literally would hang out with them. That relationship started with me though. I welcomed them into my heart. I thanked them for working on my child. I made them laugh in the most serious of times and I was understanding when they were doing what they needed to do to find answers. That trust in them turned into them trusting me and they include me and my ideas at their morning meetings about my son's care. They hear me, they correct me, they ask me my opinion. They respect me as I do them.

And then...

When we got the news of Dominics neurological condition, I was showered with love from the entire unit! Hugging me in the hallway, checking in on me during their breaks, crying with me! I've had fellow's come by during rotations on other floors to check on us, surgery physician's assistants come by after their shift all because they like us! They have invested in us and they put everything they have into our care because.. well isn't it obvious? You treat your friends better than your enemies... right?

I had an incredibly precious moment where I got to finally hold Dominic in my lap for the first time since surgery. I looked at him as if he were a new born baby. You know that --> I can't stop looking at this baby because I'm afraid I'm going to miss something look? It was just like that! I was grinning from ear to ear and my heart was whole. During those moments, my nurse took pictures on her work phone (with permission) and sent them to everyone on the unit. Once again... doctors, nurses, assistants... they all poured in to congratulate us and cry happy tears with us and hug us. They even went out of their way to wash his hair with real soap and water while he was in his mama's arms. It was the most magical moment and they all wanted to be a part of it. It was so special.

The moral of my story, and I've said it before... be kind. If you have questions, ask them with love and not accusation. If you're worried, express that but again, without accusation because it's very rare that you find someone who is excited to see someone hurting, especially when they go into a career to help people. They are really trying their hardest for you. It's okay to be scared. It's okay to be worried... just don't point it at people who don't deserve it. Be loving and kind.

Because love abounds

Love to you all

Whitney

Live it like a Movie...

I know it's been a little while since my last post... but things have been CRAZY here! Even though Dominic is in therapy almost 5 hours a day, I some how am crazy busy all the time! When Dude is around, there's lots of trips to the bathroom, because he can tell me now when he has to go. And, when he's gone, I'm cleaning up everything that doesn't get cleaned when he's here, making myself eat when I can, showering when I can...
10/14/2011 Crashing into things :)

Some GREAT news here... Remember when we got transfered to Legacy Emanuel?? Dominic couldn't do anything for himself... infact, he didn't even want to get out of bed for the most part!

Now, he's not only moving his right side... A LOT, but,
he's able to hold himself in a sitting position...
he's using his right arm to help him sit up...
he's opening both hands...
he's holding a pencil with his left hand...
he can feed himself...
AND...
HE'S WALKING!

being silly
Okay well, when he walks, he looks a little bit like Weekend at Burnies, but he's walking on his own! He also gets a little bit tired as he walks... but he's walking ten's hundred's of feet at a time! I'm so proud of him!

It's so crazy to think of how I felt that day when we found out that he had had a stroke. I was scared and I didn't know what to think, or what to expect. Anyone who has ever met Dude... knows him for his charming personality. If he couldn't get that back.. what would he be like? On top of that, sports are his life! He had been looking forward to this surgery so that he could actually keep up with the other kids... and this is what happens.

Occupational Therapy with Alaina
... and Toren
Funny thing though, during surgery, Dr. Armsby came out and was chatting with us just about him and life... She had mentioned just how strong she believed Dominic to be. She had said that there was only so much she could do and so much she was doing.. Dominic had always met her more than half way. His will has kept him with us more than any medical procedure ever could.

(: Portland :)
Music Therapy: Dominic Playing the Guitar
I think that this trip has shown that her belief is more than true. Dominic is not only my love, but my strength, my courage, my fighter, my everything. I have to say, I come from a long line of people who don't like to be told what to do. I also come from a longer line of people who are willing to work hard for what they want and what they believe in and it has all come to a head with him. He is the epitome of all of the above. He is only 5 and has told the doctors, No! I am going to make it through all of this... And he has worked harder than all of us combined. It makes me so incredibly proud. (As I've said a million times before hehe)

Have any of you been thinking about the lantern idea?? Because, you might want to start thinking about getting those lanterns in your possession. I have this hunch that something big might happen soon :)

I hope you all are having an amazing day like we are!
And sorry the video is sideways :)

The Story of Auntie Tia

Tia and I, being Tia and I
To be quite fair... we should start at the beginning. I'm talking, day one. I actually remember the day my little sister was born. Not the whole day, mind you I was only 2! But never the less, I remember things about that day. I remember my dad throwing my cousin up in the air and begging for my turn. I remember my grandma trying to keep me busy as we waited... and I remember the first moment I met her. Ooohhhh I was so excited to see my baby sister! I loved her so much already!

Halloween 2007
From that day on, she didn't even stand a chance! We were inseparable, but it was perfect. Tia was (and still can be) so painfully shy, whereas I have never met a stranger in my life. I did all of the talking, and Tia did all of the thinking. I would say, we made a pretty great team. Thank God too, because our mom worked a lot when we were little, and we had to take care of each other.

I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that we... shared... EVERYTHING! Sometimes unwillingly, but we did none the less. Up until I was in high school, we even shared a room, and when we got older, even ended up dating some of the same guys. (LOL)

Well we grew up, and despite our disagreements, nothing could touch the bond that we had formed. People tried to get between us, and it would work for maybe a month, but that was about it. I didn't think we could get much closer... and then I had Dominic.

When Dude was born, he looked just like Tia. In fact, when we would go out places, people always told her how cute her little boy was! Unless people knew he was mine, it was an automatic assumption that he was hers! Sometimes I was jealous of her stealing my thunder, but for the most part, I was okay with it.

On our way to the snow
At the beginning, it was me, Tia, and Dude. Tia was only 18 when he was born and she had her fun years ahead of her. She was free to do whatever it was that she wanted, but she chose us. She helped me unlike anything I could ever explain. She was just as much his mom as I was, and actually I used to joke around about how she was the best dad ever! If she knew that I had a long night, she would wake up with him in the morning. At work, when he couldn't go to daycare, she would keep him busy or grab him when I couldn't. She put her "auntie rights" on the back burner and helped me discipline him when he needed it. I'm not sure that she has gotten to spoil him and send him home yet. She would baby-sit anytime I ever needed it whether it be to go have fun, workout, or just take a nap, and not one time have I ever EVER heard her complain about having to watch him for me, or cook him dinner, or anything. I think she just assumed that he was her responsibility just as much as he was mine. There were even times when I would get so upset with him for whatever reason, and I would have to ask him, "Do you want me to go get Auntie?" and he would straighten right up. Those two built a bond that is just as strong as the one that her and I have built. It's just as strong as the bond that Dude and I have built!

Halloween 2009
Two years ago, Auntie met a wonderful guy, and so did I. (I wasn't joking! We do everything together!) They both treat us like princesses. These poor guys didn't realize when they met us, the package they were opening up. Aaron of course knew he was getting the girl and the kid, but he was unaware of the sister. Poor Seth met Tia and didn't realize that he was getting a sister and kid!

our "sister" tatoo's
A year ago, Seth got a job and he moved our Tia two hours away from us. It was one of the hardest transitions Dominic and I have faced. You see, unlike a lot of single moms out there, I always had her. I wasn't ever alone in raising him... she still always had my back. People would try and comfort me in telling me that it was only two hours away, but let me ask you this, have you ever had to drive two hours for dinner every single night? Because that's what we did! After working together all day long, we would cook dinner at each others houses, hang out for hours until bed time. Then we would wake up and do it all over again. We realized just how many friends we didn't hang out with when she left!

In the waiting room, right before surgery. 8/31/2011
Dominic still misses his Auntie. After his Papa, she is his favorite person in the world. He lights up whenever he talks about her, and talking to her on the phone makes his day. He and I are pretty lucky to have her. I thank God every single day for her and everything that she has done for me. (I'm still convinced that we are going to live next door to each other when we're old... or even in the same house, and be the same old crazy girls we were in our early twenties. Sorry Seth and Aaron!)

Hey Tia, if you are reading this... I love you more than anything. Thank you for being more than just a sister to me. You have been my teacher, my shoulder to cry on, my refuge, and most of all you have been the very best friend I could ever ask for. It's hard for me to imagine siblings not having the relationship that we have been so fortunate to have. There is nothing in this world that I wouldn't do for you. I hope you know that!
Oh and Seth, you are such a lucky guy! Thanks for taking care of my little sister. She means the world to me ya know, keep her safe and never let her cry!

xoxo

I want to be a Disney Princess

I have been watching a ton of Disney movies with Dominic lately, and they make it look so easy! If you are a good person, and you wish on a star... you get what you want... WELLLLLLLLLL Why can't I just be a Disney Princess?? I mean, I've been wishing on stars, and times of the day, and throwing money in wishing wells since I can remember.. Where's all the loot?!?!?!

Actually, I finally watched an amazing Disney Princess movie last night. The Princess and the Frog. It makes me want to go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for one.. but second of all, the message is amazing. Not only do you have to have wishes and dreams, but you have to work hard for them too! And, on top of all that, you can be complete without love. So, basically, love, work hard, and never lose sight of your dreams, and your life will be complete. (don't forget about being honest, hanging out with the right people.. and the list goes on)

Thanks again Walt Disney and your amazing company for showing our kids in a fun way, what's important in life. I obviously have learned a lot from you and your movies. I'm just glad that they are still around for our kids.

I can't wait to get home and start my hard work all over again. Dominic is doing all the hard work he can right now. He's doing great in therapy. He started moving his right arm a couple of days ago and now he can move it on command. We need to work on some hand eye cordination BUT he's going to be just fine I think.

He keeps me in the best mood! Last night when I had the headache of the year, he asked me if he could "ruv" (rub) my head for me... to make me feel better. He keeps me laughing and is so tired of being in this stupid bed it's driving him crazy.

We have our first conference tomorrow with all of the doctors and therapists and I should have a better idea about what's going on. Keep those prayers coming!!

OH P.S.! Have you given any thought to my lantern get together???? (the idea came from another Disney Princess movie that everyone should see... Tangled) I would love to get everyone together and even if you don't live in my area... sending off a lantern thanking Him for all answered prayers (or whoever it is you have sent your requests too) I also think, what an amazing experience for everyone to actually get to meet each other and see what the power of love can do!

If you ordered one, T-shirts and bracelets will be available on Thursday! And it would be so amazing to see everyone in their shirts or bracelets. So, please, send me pictures of you and your loved ones wearing them! whitfitz.wf@gmail.com. I will post them on here under a new page that is under construction!

Love to you all! And thank you once again from my whole family!

Let me paint you a picture

I know that by the sound of things, everything is going really well. Well it is, but it I am going to be very honest with you. It isn't going easy. Since his stroke, it is very hard for him to move and talk. His muscles cramp and cramp [could you imagine having a full body charlie horse?] and to top it off, he can't tell us what is wrong. For the past couple of days, all he can do is scream at the top of his lungs. His poor lips aren't forming the right words and he is so frustrated. I can't blame him. I would be kicking and screaming and yelling too!

Well the good news is... [and there's always good news]
Today has started a new chapter.
He got a lot of really great sleep! He slept all night last night and took a 3 hour nap today.
The best part is...
when he woke up, there was no screaming or kicking.
There was no frustration,
AND
He ate more than we expected him to which also aides in healing.

So yes, things aren't exactly cake.... BUT they are good!

This morning, when Dude woke up, and I was turning him I told him I loved him and he said "I love you too".
A little later, Aaron was doing something similar and asked how he was doing and he said "good".
My little stud. Things are going to be okay!

Everyone left today including Aaron. To some that sounds scary. To me, it's relieving. Now Dude and I can work on healing and getting back on a schedule. We are going to be back before you know it :)

Dominic my love, you are such an inspiration to us all. Thank you God for giving us all the opportunity to know and love this little boy. And thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn from him as well. He is the strongest and bravest guy in the world and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the universe. Thank you for allowing me to be his mommy. It has been such a blessing having him to love and hold and kiss every single day.

THANK YOU!!!

It's kinda surreal when you can sit back and see some of the things that God has put in your life, and why.

In the words of my dad, "This ain't my first rodeo". Dude and I have lived in and out of the hospital since the first day we met. We have gone through surgeries, viruses and coding. I have made many nurse and doctor friends, and I have gone toe to toe with just as many. I have learned how to give shots, change feeding tubes, silence alarms, read monitors and know when to trust them. Let's face it, being a mommy to Dude has been the biggest learning experience I have ever encountered, and I did the majority of it on my own. I will never ever complain about any of it. I've never had to. Just because I didn't have anyone physically next to me, didn't mean that I was alone.

This trip has been so much different than any other hospital stay. Not only have Dude and I had so many people on our side mentally and emotionally, but physically. In the past, I have turned down company so that I could focus all of my time and energy into getting us home. This time, I didn't have a choice. And this time, it was for the better. This time, I couldn't have done this alone. I couldn't have taken the news that I got the other day by myself. I couldn't have told anyone, and keeping it to myself would have been detrimental to me and my health.

So I owe a HUGE thank you to everyone who has been here forcing food down my throat (Tia), sitting in the background, texting me without reply, leaving me messages and for being so concerned that you follow my blog. I can't tell you all how much it means to me that people care about me and Dude so much that you take time out of your day to pray for us, think about us, and read my words. It makes me cry just thinking about how blessed we are.

Again... Thank You to everyone who loves and cares about us!!

As far as Dude goes, today has been an amazing day. His muscles have been spasming which is a little bit painful for him, but it's a good sign. That means his brain is making connections to the parts that had stroked. Poor guy has also been very frustrated because he hasn't been able to form the words he wants to say. Because of that, he can spend a good portion of an hour screaming. The good news in this is that his thought process is normal. Getting frustrated means he is going to try and make those words come out. After a good sleep he has been able to form some pretty important words and more importantly, been able to answer questions. He not only said I love you, but told his Auntie, I love you too. He says mama and when he was tired of being in his chair said "upupupupup". He also answered "good" when Aaron asked how he was doing.

God is good. Life is good. Thanks again everyone for building my strength.

Good Morning!

You know, it's really nice to have this blog so that I can vent and just talk about things that I'm feeling. The past 2 days have been so crazy with all of the events and findings. I was so full of all kinds of emotion. I was of course.. happy, mad, sad, and most of all SCARED.  I could tell you the ins and outs of Dude's little heart. I know all of the things he has, and all of the things he doesn't have. I know where everything goes, and whether or not it should go there; if God put it there with his own hands or through a surgeon. I could tell you where every single freckle is on his whole body. I could tell you how big his pupils are, exactly what shade of blue they are. I know where every single tooth is and just by looking at his face can tell if they had been brushed. I know every little detail about his whole body except for one... his brain. So when they gave me the news, I was more scared of the unknown than anything else. What does this mean? What do we  do?Where do we go from here? There is something scary about the unknown. Through out the years of dealing with all of this, of course among all other complications that could occur stroke was always on the list and was just something I would never consider. None of them were.

I think in life, the scariest part of life, is the part that we are uncertain of. This has been no different. Now, I have a little bit of a handle on things. I got to see the actual strokes on the CT scan and all of the doctors explained everything to me. There is a difference between a stroke in an adult and a stroke in children. The biggest difference is this: You can't teach an old dog new tricks. When an adult has a stroke it is very difficult to reroute the electrical highways. In children, those highways aren't exactly worn in yet so the electrodes can stray and find a different way much easier. Since there is still a lot of development in Dominic's brain still happening, this will be a lot easier to get through than if it were me.

Today he is already moving his right side exceptionally more often than  yesterday which makes the doctors very hopeful. Swelling in his brain is the worst between 48 and 72 hours. With swelling comes lack of blood flow, so if he still isn't getting enough blood to those parts of his brain and he is gaining strength, those are positive signs. He keeps yelling out of frustration because talking is so hard for him again. We will most likely have to learn how to say a lot of words over again. We will be here for a while with his heart, and then a little longer for rehabilitation.

Everyone stay hopeful and positive! We are all going to have to do this the same way we always have... together!!! They say that it takes a village and let me tell you how thankful I am to have such an amazing village on my side. Every single one of you reading this has a special relationship with me and Dude and every single one of you has helped to make him the warrior he is today. Dude is stronger than all of us and that right there is the reason that he has been chosen for all of this. God doesn't give us more than we can handle and obviously, Dude can handle a lot!!

We are all gearing up for the first Oregon game of the season and I know it is going to make Dude feel at home when he hears the game on and all of us saying OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOduring kick off. Thanks for keeping up with us... things are going to be just fine.

September 2, 2011

Today has been one of the hardest days of my life. All night last night Dominic threw little fits and kicked his leg and screamed. He wasn't communicating very well he was just upset. Today, we took a lot of his "lines" out including his Foley catheter and an arterial line. One thing that has been concerning was that he was only kicking his one leg. Everyone was really concerned about this so we have been talking to new doctors and going through new tests. The tests came back and the results are this: Dominic had a stroke. It happened sometime either during surgery or right afterwards. We found out early, which is good. They have stopped the intense blood thinner and started him on aspirin so as not to cause bleeding in his brain. He will have to go through rehab to get movement back into his right extremities and for his speech.. but already he is trying to talk and succeeding a little bit. He is moving slowly his right arm and a little on his leg but it's still going to be a long long journey. We are all optimistic. Very optimistic. Things are going to be just fine just please keep praying. The Lords Will will prevail and I know He loves us all, in every condition.

When we talked with his surgeon today and his cardiologist, they both had told me that not only has he been through worse than this and made it through, but that more often than not kids do great! Things are going to be okay. And please don't be scared. We aren't. This is different for kids than it is an adult. Their brains are still developing and therefore can make new pathways and figure out how to do things.. just differently. Keep those positive prayers coming our way. And I will keep everyone as updated as possible. Thank you again.

a day in the life of us

I know I have been saying that I would post on here for a while, but to be honest, being on the computer was the last thing on my mind. So for that I apologize.

I won't lie, when I am asked the question, how are you doing. I'm exhausted. Because of that, I have done nothing but get frustrated, cry, yell, cry, and work really hard to be happy. Did I mention cry?? The funny thing is that I'm not sad, I'm not scared, just strictly exhausted. Actually, I don't feel anything at all about surgery. To me this is just another step in life. The most worrisome part of this whole adventure is that now I have a family other than Dude and I. Now I have 3 other people who need and use me every single day and I have to leave them all behind for what could be 2 months. I won't be there for the first day of school. I won't be there for Alaina's 8th birthday. I won't see Toren's first football game. I won't be there to make sure they are eating good or drinking enough water. I can't answer the stupid questions that kids come up with or yell at them for drinking milk out of the carton. I won't be able to do Alaina's hair. All of these things that I'm going to miss, run through my head over and over and over. [BIG BREATH] Everything is going to work out fine and in the end, this will just be an blink of time. I will see so many more of these things than I will miss, but it's still hard.

We got here Monday night at midnight... It felt like the longest drive ever! Dominic did great, he just slept like he always does. I tried my hardest to stay awake with Aaron. I succeeded but it was HARD! Yesterday we arrived at the hospital at 7:45 for pre-op appointments. We were told it would be quick since we are here all the time and within the last couple of months they did all of the tests we would need, other than an EKG and vitals. We ended up being there until 2:30 in the afternoon, talking with nurses and hematologists and getting blood samples and ultrasounds of his arteries in his legs..... [breath] We made it. We had a wonderful dinner with all of my friends that are here to help support. The cheesecake factory was wonderful and I think we all over ate a little bit.

So now here we are. We have been at Doernbecher since 6am and they took him back at 8am. The actual surgery started at 9:30 and that it will take about 5 and a half hours. The nurse called me to tell me that everything is going beautifully and that they were getting ready to start but she said "Whitney, I have to tell you that right before he went to sleep he said to me 'I want my mommy' and I told him that you will be waiting for him in his room when he gets done. He laid there with a big ol' smile on his face until he was asleep". She also said that about every hour and a half she will give me updates. Chances are, I won't be updating every time she calls, but if something important comes up, I will let everyone know.

For the past weeks, I have been talking to Dude about all of this. I ask him how he feels, is he nervous... he just said that he was excited to not get shots and that he gets to take a really long nap. But then this morning happened and you could tell that he was a little uneasy about things. The nurse gave him a drug that helps you relax and forget. When you are in a good mood, it will make you really happy, however, if you aren't then it will accelerate whatever mood you are in. Everyone thinks that I'm this super strong woman, but when it took my 5 year old a big dose of medicine to let his guard down, it was a big wake up call of who the strong one was.

Dominic my love, I'm so proud of you. Because of you, I have learned so much about life and love. You are stronger and braver than any grown man. You are more loving than the most nurturing person. I love you with all of my heart and I'm so excited to see you when you get done!

We're totally getting Hitched :)

This has been such a crazy summer for us!! I touched a little bit on it, but man did I barely reach the surface! Not only did it just start getting warm here, but we have been SLAMMED busy!

This year, Aaron is on the board for Grants Pass Pop Warner which is a total {dream come true} for him. Because of that, football has taken up every ounce of our spare time since the beginning of baseball season... yeah, I meant baseball season! We have had a coin drive, gear distribution, meetings and now finally [CONDITIONING WEEK] Man oh man has it been crazy.

Somehow in the middle of all of this madness, we have found time to go on the boat, swim, play baseball in the yard, get our chores done, see Auntie Tia and Uncle Seth, and get some pretty amazing  engagement pictures taken. {Thank you Traci Buck!!}

Tomorrow is the last day of conditioning week, and I'm excited and sad all at the same time. All of this work and it's over! I can't imagine what my wedding is going to be like!! All of this work for only one night :)

Please, let me know how your summer is going! I would love to hear all about it! (I need some pen pals to keep me busy)

I FOUND IT!!!

No no, not my marbles. I think those are gone for good! When you have 3 kids like I do, and they are all in every single activity known to man kind, you not only lose your marbles but you lose just about everything else that pertains to you as a person.

Since time is of the essence [and I never have any of it] I just HAD to share...
I found this product, and I fell in {love} You literally don't have to scrub your toilets for MONTHS! I'm not kidding you! The problem is, the stores around me stopped carrying it. They carry other products by that company but not this one. Are you ready for it?? Are you SURE????

I'm not even sure as to how I came across this in the first place, but now I can't live without it! I have a ton of minerals in my water so the bowl is always orange or pink or whatever, and like most people... I HATE scrubbing the toilet. So I don't!

I hope that you try this out, because I just know you are going to love it as much as I do! I mean seriously... no more toilet scrubbing... HALLELUJAH!

I hope you have a wonderful day. Smile often and Love always.
